nao for the blind
by jeremy dillahay
I am not doing it yet, but I would want to create a program that would help blind people, with guiding them in buildings, for the new residents of Samuel W bell home for the sightless, I have a couple senarios.
Senario 1, guiding a new resident to and from meals.
Nao robot knocks on door
Nao "I have come to take you to lunch downstairs."
resident grabs a harness and then the nao says, "OK we are turning right and taking an immediate left onto the elevator.. they get on the elevator, and then takes the person downstairs,
Nao, "Lets take a right here"
they walk the resident to the dining room,
Nao, "lets count the windows to your seat,
they count the windows to the residents seat,
then they would turn left, and find the seat based on a letter number architecture, like the tables would be numbered, and the seats would be lettered, for example table 3 seat a
then they guide the resident into the seat, and say, "I will help you back to your room after lunch."
Guiding resident accross the street to convenience store across from the home
resident, "Nao, I need to go across the street to get something to eat from the convenience store." Nao, "I will help you, can you carry me down the steps, or should we use the elevator.?"
Resident, "Steps," user carries nao down steps," OK we're down stairs," the resident grabs naos harness
nao guides them to the edge of the streets, and turns his head both ways to check for traffic, Nao, "Traffic is clear we can go" they walk across the street, and then nao would say, "Turn right," they would make a slight right, following the curve of the blacktop,
then they would turn left and find the sidewalk, and walk to the convenience store, the robot would help the resident find someone to help the resident while in the store, and then wait, meanwhile doing tai chi, to pass the time, when the resident is ready to return, they would guide them back."
Note the nao robot would be used in conjunction with a mobility cane.
